2007 Corona Extra World Superbike Championship Round seven, Silverstone, UK, 27th May Race Report
TROY BAYLISS WINS BUT THE BRITISH WEATHER HAS THE LAST SAY
Reigning World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss overcame the heavy rains in England to take the unpredictable first race win at Silverstone, but at the time of completeion no one knew the race two would also have to be cancelled because of atrocious weather. The only eventual race winner was also the superpole winner, Troy Bayliss onboard the Xerox Ducati who took the race win over Yamaha Motor Italia's Nori Haga by two seconds.Third on the podium was early race leader and Haga's team-mate Troy Corser who finished four seconds down after some great games of high risk between the leading trio in wet treacherous conditions. Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider Roberto Rolfo had a great ride to finish fourth and managed to break away from PSG-1 Kawasaki's Regis Laconi who finished fifth. Alstare Suzuki's Max Biaggi had a safe ride to finish sixth with Xerox Ducati's Lorenzo Lanzi seventh, but the ride of the day went to Britains James Toseland onboard the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda who fell on lap three and managed to rejoin in 18th place and claw his way through the field to finish an amazing eighth. Toseland still leads the championship with 237 points with Haga on 214 points, third is Biaggi on 201 points and with Bayliss taking the race win puts him upto fourth on 189 points, while Corser slipped back to fifth with 151 points.
WORLD SUPERSPORT CHAMPIONSHIP
Anthony West won his first race of the 2007 season for the Yamaha World SSP Racing team in wet torrid conditions and proving to be the clear victor by some 33 seconds from Stiggy Motorsports Honda rider Robin Harms. A red flag ended the race six laps early, whena fallen machine blocked the racing line. Katsuaki Fujiwara was the final podium finisher after a mid - race tussle with two other riders, and problems with water ingress to his engine and helmet visor. Championship leader Kena Sofuoglu fell on lap one and was ruled out of the points for the first time in 2007. In a race of attrition, several top riders also failed to finish, but Fabien Foret finish fourth for the GIL Kawasaki Team, and he reduced the advantage of Sofuoglu to 45 points. Kenan Sofuoglu now has 145 points, Foret 100, Fujiwara 69 and Harms 59.
