Pole for Sykes at Doningtom Park

It seemed that the weather couldn’t quite make its mind up this morning ahead of the qualifying session of World Superbike. Fortunately, the rain knocked off and the track began to dry out just as they prepared to make their way to the track. Laverty was the first to set a lap, a 1:28.857 with Fores .5 off in the very early stages of Superpole 1. He was constantly improving his times and shaving off the seconds, but couldn’t come close to Tom Sykes’ lap record. Although both Stefan Bradl and Xavi Fores had stints in the top 2, it was Jordi Torres who was out to impress.

Of course, it’s the last five minutes where everyone looks to put in their quick laps, but nobody could seem to shift at Laverty’s pace, letting him effortlessly sail through to Superpole 2 with Xavi Fores hot on his heels.

For Superpole 1, everyone’s eyes fell on Tom Sykes.

It is no secret that he is fast here, securing eight straight victories and titling himself the King of Donington. But there are riders who will be looking to upset Sykes’ rhythm. His team mate Jonathan Rea has looked seriously strong all weekend, and you can never rule out the factory Ducati’s. Wildcarding at this weekend’s round is Leon Haslam with the Kawasaki Puccetti Racing team, and with Donington Park being his home turf (quite literally), a pole from him couldn’t be ruled out.

Early on it was a battle between the Kawasaki’s for the top spot and it looked as if Sykes was still on his Donington winning form. But enter Chaz Davies, coming in with just two and a half minutes to go to set the fastest lap so far. In the closing minutes however, Tom Sykes swooped in to break his own lap record and set a 1:26.6, just .1 quicker than he’s ever done around the British circuit. Unfortunately for Haslam, it just wasn’t meant to be as he crashed out with just a minute and a half to go, destroying all chances he had of putting it on the front row.
