FABRIZIO AND HASLAM TAKE WINS IN KYALAMI THRILLERS
Two very different races delivered two types of riveting spectacle for the 50,000 strong euthusiastic fans at Kyalami in South Africa. The opening race was taken by a rejuvenated Michel Fabrizio who took his first win of the season for the Ducati Xerox team. Race two victor Leon Haslam, on the other hand, battled it out right to the end, with four of the top riders all within a second of each other after 24 intense laps. The net result is an extended championship lead for Alstare Suzuki's Leon Haslam, now on 222 points to Aprilia Alitalia's Max Biaggi's 207 points.
Race One. Ducati Xerox rider Michel Fabrizio took an early lead in the first race of the day and did not put a foot wrong as he dominated throughout. Behind was Althea Ducati rider Carlos Checa, while a patient Leon Haslam took third, who extended his championship lead over fourth place rider Aprilia's Max Biaggi. Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider Johnathan Rea made an amazing charge towards the end of the race took fifth ahead of Aprilia Alitalia's Leon Camier and the two Sterilgarda Yamaha team-mate James Toseland and Cal Crutchlow. PATA B&G Racing Ducati's Jakub Smrz rode to a battling ninth with Haslam's team-mate Sylvain Quintoli in tenth.
Race Two. Alstare Suzuki's Leon Haslam wrapped up a magnificent race two win as five riders were covered by just 1.479 seconds at the flag as any one of the three were in with a real chance of winning the race on the final lap. Hannspree Ten Kate Honda's Johnathan Rea took second with Aprilia Alitalia's Max Biaggi third. Pole sitter Sterilgarda Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow rode to a strong fourth with Althea Ducati's Carlos Checa fifth, making it the top five finishing all on different manufacturer machinery. Crutchlow's team-mate James Tosleand battled hard to take sixth ahead of BMW Motorrad's Troy Corser and race one winner Michel Fabrizio. Jakub Srmz was ninth again with Ducati Xerox's Nori Haga in tenth. In the championship Haslam now has 222 points, Biaggi 207 points with Rea and Checa both tied on 141 points in joint third.
SUPERSPORT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Parkalgar Honda rider Eugene Laverty ripped open an early gap which he was able to extend all race long took his fourth win of the year ahead of Hannspree Ten Kate Honda's former world champion Kenan Sofuoglu, with Triumph BE1 Racing's Chaz Davis taking his first podium of the season in third. Sofuoglu now leads the championship, as leader Kawasaki Motocard.com rider Joan Lascorz could only finish fifth. The leading total points now stand at Sofuoglu 117, Laverty 116 and Lascoz 112.
