2009 Hannspree World SuperBike Championship Round 5, Monza, Italy, May 10th Race Report
MICHEL FABRIZIO AND BEN SPIES TAKE A WIN APIECE AT MONZA
Ducati Xerox rider Michel Fabrizio and Sterilgarda Tamaha World Superbike's Ben Spies both took victories at the fifth round of the Hannspree World Superbike Championship at the Autodromo Nazionale de Monza infront of 118,000 spectators where home favourite Michel Fabrizio took his maiden in superbike in race one and Ben Spies making amends in race two after his Yamaha ran out of fuel on the last corner in race one while leading. Championship leader Ducati Xerox rider Nori Haga took the runner-up spot in race one but crashed out of race two after being hit by a bird on lap three but he still has a 54 points advantage over second place man Ben Spies.
Race One. The first race off the saw one of the thrilling battles ever seen at Monza as the race had to have two starts after two crashes involving Makoto Tamada, Tommy Hill, Troy Corser, Max Neukirchner and Brendan Roberts which led to a one hour delay, but it was the German Max Neukirchner who came the worst off as it was later confirmed that he had broken his femur and discolated his right foot. The outcome of the race was decided at the final bend as Ben Spies was well on his way to a fifth win of the season when his Yamaha ran out of fuel just metres from the line giving Ducati Xerox's Michel Fabrizio his first win in superbikes with team-mate Nori Haga in second and Aprilia's Max Biaggi taking third but the celebrations did not last for the Aprilia team as Biaggi was given at twenty second race penalty for cutting a corner in the race now giving Ten Kate Honda's Ryuichi Kiyonari the final podium position. Fourth place went to Brux Alstare Suzuki's Yukio Kagayama ahead of the British pair of Hannspree Ten Kate Honda's Johnny Rea and Sterilgarda Yamaha World Superbikes Tom Sykes. Ruben Xaus gave the BMW team it's been finsh of the year in seventh with DFX COrse Ducati's Regis Laconi taking eighth, ninth Hannspree Ten Honda's Carlos Checa with Kawasaki World Superbikes Broc Parkes taking tenth.
Race Two. Sterilgarda Yamaha's Ben Spies immediately made amends fom race one by leaving everyone standing to take his fifth win of the season ahead of Ducati Xerox's Michel Fabrizio who was having his best weekend to date in second with Ten Kate Honda's Ryuichi Kiyonari taking another third while championship leader Ducati Xerox rider Nori Haga crashed out of the race on lap three due to a bird hitting his arm at highspeed.
Britain's Hannspree Ten Kate Honda's Johnny Rea had his finish to date by taking fourth ahead of Aprilia's Max Biaggi and Sterilgarda Yamaha's Tom Sykes with Britain's Leon Haslam who came through from seventeenth to take seventh for the Stiggy Racing Honda team. Guandalini Racing Ducati's Jakub Smrz took eighth, ninth BMW's Ruben Xaus with Hannspree Ten Kate Honda's Carlos Checa in tenth.
WORLD SUPERSPORT CHAMPIONSHIP.
Britain's Yamaha World Supersport's rider Cal Crutchlow took his second win of the season ahead of Provec Kawasaki's Joan Lascorz with Crutchlow's team-mate Fabien Foret taking third ahead of Irelands Parkalgar Honda's Eugene Laverty in fourth. Crutchlow now leads the championship with 99 points which is an 18 points advantage over second place man Parkalgar Honda's Eugene Laverty who is on 81 points with Hannspree Ten Kate Honda's Kenan Sofuoglu in third on 72 points and Team-mate and current world champion Andrew Pitt in fourth on 54 points.
