Shakey scorches to new lap record at Thruxton
Shane 'Shakey' Byrne set a blistering pace in the second MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship free practice session to post the fastest ever lap of Thruxton this afternoon, running under the previous record of Tommy Hill set back in 2010 with the former technical specifications.
The perfect conditions at the Hampshire circuit saw the lap times tumble from this morning with the Be Wiser Ducati team hitting the top of the times to end the opening day fastest. The four-time champion was ahead of Luke Mossey who held second place for the local Quattro Plant Teccare Kawasaki team.
Mossey had held off the challenge from Lee Jackson, who again posted an impressive time to move third fastest on the timesheets ahead of Jason O'Halloran on the leading Honda Racing Fireblade and Richard Cooper on the second Buildbase BMW.
Ryuichi Kiyonari surged to the top six on the Bennetts Suzuki; firing himself into the top six to push Christian Iddon back into seventh place on the leading Tyco BMW and rookie Jake Dixon. Michael Laverty and Peter Hickman completed the top ten. Leon Haslam and James Ellison on the JG Speedfit Kawasakis were 15th and 25th respectively.
